A few minutes’ walk from the Hôtel Les Théâtres is a fascinating place. The Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts) is a large higher education and research establishment that occupies impressive buildings. It’s open to visitors, so why not take advantage of your break in Paris and discover this unique institution?
A place steeped in history
Established in 1794 in the buildings of the Royal Priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, the CNAM is today a renowned teaching and research institution. It was founded by the Catholic priest and revolutionary leader, Abbot Henri Grégoire, at the time of the National Convention during the French Revolution and still fulfils its original mission of training technicians and engineers. For more than two hundred years, the institution has been a repository of technical and scientific artifacts and machines of all kinds that bear witness to technological development. During your visit, you will be able to admire one of the rare representations of Romanesque art in Paris.
Impressive collections
Among the essentials of the museum’s collections, don't miss the original aircraft of Louis Blériot and Clément Ader. Dating from 1909 and 1897 respectively, these are pioneering flying machines. Dating from the 16th century is a magnificent astrolabe that accompanied the great geographical discoveries. Then, there’s Blaise Pascal's mechanical calculator, dating from 1642-1652, which takes us back to the beginnings of modern mathematics and statistics. From cameras and phonographs to steam engines, all areas of engineering and technology are represented. The museum also offers demonstrations and workshops for children.
The Musée du Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers is a showcase of the fabulous machines and objects that have made their marks on history. Treat yourself to an astonishing visit for two during your romantic break at the Hôtel Les Théâtres. Our special Valentine's Day offer is available on our website!
